MONTEFALCO

Perched high on a hill dominating the valleys of the rivers Topino and Clitunno, Montefalco offers superb views over central Umbria, in fact it has been nicknamed “the balcony of Umbria”. Besides, it is famous for its Sagrantino wine. Montefalco retains some elements of Roma origin, but the atmosphere is, above all, medieval. The main access to the town is via the 14th-century Porta Sant’Agostino. From here, Via Umberto I and then Corso Mameli lead up to the main square. Along the way is the church of Sant’Agostino (late 13th century) whose facade is adorned with slender columns and a rose window. Inside the church there are a number of interesting frescoes among them one attributed to Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
